Dear Viking Community,

At Isaac L. Sowers Middle School, we take pride in providing students with unique learning experiences that broaden perspectives and develop intellectual curiosity. In order to systematically provide these opportunities to students, Sowers looks to continually improve as a school through our educational programming. The costs associated with these improvements have been a challenge for our school to meet as the State Department of Education’s formula for allocating resources to schools places Sowers in a low priority due to our demographic makeup.  As such, our school does not receive supplemental funding that could support our improvement model.

While the funding Sowers receives currently allows us to operate an excellent school, sustaining our results and growing our program will be a challenge without additional assistance from our community. With your support, we hope to continue to move Sowers in a positive direction as we focus on the following key actions and services for our students…

  • Student Learning Experiences: Our hope is for each grade level to participate in at least one field trip. Donations would fund buses and other trip costs. Possible destinations could include:  the California Science Center, Museum of Tolerance, Orange County Sanitation District, Yakult Factory, Natural History Museum, John Wayne Airport, Segerstrom Center for the Arts, etc.
  • Student Assemblies: We believe our students benefit from hearing different voices that can offer support and advice to them while navigating the complexities of adolescence. Bringing in guest speakers and organizations for student support assemblies allow us to do this. Possible assemblies could include topics to help students manage life as a middle school student such as: bullying/cyber-bullying, social media, confidence, peer pressure, abuse of drugs/tobacco/alcohol, body image, etc…
  • Technology and Learning Materials: Sowers continues to have a need to procure technology that allows our students to innovatively access academic content. We hope to purchase material that can improve our STEM offerings, such as materials for our 3-D printers, coding kits, and robotics supplies. We plan to utilize and improve our learning spaces with these interactive technologies and materials that enhance student learning experiences.
  • Staff Professional Development: Sowers has seen a decrease in funding that provides staff training opportunities. These include registration and attendance at conferences and workshops, bringing in expert speakers, and release time for lesson planning and collaboration.

We would like to take this opportunity to request your assistance in continuing to make these programs available to our students.  Your voluntary donation of any amount would be greatly appreciated. Please go click on DONATE NOW button to give to Sowers MS using PayPal or Credit Card. If you would like to submit a check or cash instead, please make your check out to HBCSD – Sowers Middle School and write “Giving Campaign” in the notes section. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated.

Thank you, in advance, for supporting your school!

John Ashby, Ed.D.
