Sowers is posting this for PTSA

Greetings Sowers Parents,

For those of you that joined Sowers PTSA, thank you for your commitment to our school. Sowers PTSA is taking the leap into the future of membership communication and a simpler renewal electronic system called TOTEM. This system will allow for direct communication with SOWERS PTSA members.

There is nothing for you to do at this time. If you provided your email address on the membership form, we will use that email. If you did not provide one or changed your email, just send me an email. You should receive a notification from TOTEM  in the next week, so look for it.

Totem DOES NOT and WILL NOT send you advertising or sell your Emails.

Attached is the link to the state's PTSA information website.

If you have not had a chance to join and prefer to join electronically, just send me a note and I can help you out!

Thank you from Sowers PTSA board!

We are pleased to announce that California State PTA has partnered with TOTEM to design and develop an electronic membership system specifically for PTAs in California.

The district provides a special program for students who are intellectually gifted.  Students in grades 1 – 7 who perform extremely well on the district-administered Otis-Lennon School Ability Test (OLSAT) and other standardized measurements, may qualify for identification for our Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program.    Beginning this year, our district will implement GATE testing of all first graders unless opted out by parent. If you think your 2nd-7th grade child may qualify for identification and you would like this student to participate in GATE testing, you must complete a GATE Assessment Consent form.  Please submit this form on our district website:, Click on the Parents Tab, then on Parent Portal, and on GATE Assessment Consent Form (under Online Services for Parents).  Please contact Debbie Bartlett in the GATE office at (714) 964-8888 ext. 2036 with any questions you may have.

The last day to submit the GATE Assessment Consent Form

for 2nd – 7th grade testing is
Friday, December 6, 2019.

District policy allows students to be assessed a limit of two times between first and seventh grade. You may wish to discuss with your child's teacher at your parent conference in October if this would be an appropriate time to have your child assessed.

First grade testing will take place November 4 - December 13.  Students in grades 2-7 will be tested January 8 - February 7, 2020.  Children who qualify for placement in the program will be placed in the fall of the 2020-21 school year.

Dear Parents,

We are thrilled to partner with the STEP IT UP! Fitness Fundraiser that will run from 10/8 - 10/22!!

We got off to an amazing start today with an inspiring kick off assembly which talked about teamwork, gratitude, and helping others. Thank you to our students for being such a great audience!

Our students benefit from about 80% of every dollar donated during STEP IT UP! in one of two ways: as direct profits to our school and in the form of rewards and incentives given to the students who help us raise money.

Our next step is to ask each of you to take action TONIGHT by clicking the link below. It will take you to our school’s fundraiser website where you can set up your child’s Personal Donation page and invite your friends and family to join our efforts by sending them a donation request. Anyone with access to a cell phone or a computer can help us reach our goal of 100% participation!

This entire fundraiser can be completed in TEN MINUTES OR LESS. Yes, really!

Please do this TONIGHT (10/8) by sending out TEN or MORE emails/texts via your Personal Donation Page and your child will qualify for Golden Ticket prizes and drawings! Have your child return their Golden Ticket to school tomorrow to be part of the fun!

Join our REVOLUTION of FUN. It’s quick, it’s easy, and it’s a great way to support your student as they use their awesomeness to help others!

Thank you for being part of our school’s success!

(Published on behalf of HBCSD Special Education Department)

For the third year, the HBCSD Board Members passed a resolution to recognize Dyslexia Awareness Month in October.  HBCSD is continuing to raise awareness through sharing information on the website, Constant Contact notifications at the school site, professional development for staff, and the West Orange County Consortium for Special Education Community Advisory Committee.

The International Dyslexia Association (IDA) provides the following definition of dyslexia, which was adopted by the United States National Institutes of Child Health and Human Development:

Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that is neurobiological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities and the provision of effective classroom instruction. Secondary consequences may include problems in reading comprehension and reduced reading experience that can impede growth of vocabulary and background knowledge.

Below is a link to the new California Dyslexia Guidelines prepared by the California Department of Education in August 2017 and revised in October 2017.  This is a rich source of information including describing dyslexia, assessment, and best practices to support students that are struggling with dyslexia.

If you would like further information about dyslexia, please contact your school site or the Special Education Department at 714-378-2046.

Dear Parents,

We hope that the start of the new school year finds you well. By now, you child should have received a PE locker. If your student has not yet received their PE clothing order, please just have them bring a pair of shorts and a T-Shirt for use in class. We do not wish to create a great financial imposition on families, so please do not go out and purchase a new pair of shorts and t-shirt.

Good Afternoon Viking Families-
Please be advised that it has been observed that some families double park, stop in the middle of the street to drop-off/pick-up, and park in designated red zones. These practices potentially put students in an unsafe situation so we kindly ask that all families slow down for the school area and keep student safety as the utmost importance. In addition, we do have crossing guards that are managed by the City of Huntington Beach. Please reiterate to your students to obey all instructions and signs of these city employees. These crossing guards hours run from 7:55am - 9:00am and from 2:15 - 3:15pm on regular school days.

Have a great rest of the week Vikings!

Good Evening 2019-20 Viking Families-

Earlier today I spoke to all current 6th and 7th grade students during their PE class about the changes in our school design we will be experimenting with during the 2019-20 school year. I stayed to answer student questions afterwards and am happy to report that the majority of students indicated their tentative approval (thumbs up!) to try out something different. Therefore, I am excited to officially open the window for students to submit their online electives course requests for the 2019-20 school year. All course descriptions are available in the form. The window to access this form will close on Tuesday, May 28th @ Noon.

Please click on the following link to access the ISMS Electives Course Request for the 2019-20 school year: You can also copy and paste the website.

You play an important part in helping students give their best performance on this important test. As you know, we have been busy preparing and reinforcing the skills necessary for students to demonstrate their learning. Even though this assessment is a snapshot—one single perspective – it is important that our students have every advantage to do their very best. We don’t want to cause test anxiety, rather we want our students to be as prepared as possible. There are many ways in which you can help your child put his/her best foot forward.

The following guidelines can help set our students up for success:

The night before the test:

1. Make sure your child goes to bed on time so he or she is well-rested.

2. Keep your routine as normal as possible. Upsetting natural routines may make children feel insecure.

3. Be positive and confident in the fact that you know your child will do his/her best.

4. Plan ahead to avoid conflicts on the morning of the test.

The morning of the test:

1. Get up a few minutes early to avoid rushing and make sure your child arrives at school on time.

2. Have your child eat a nutritious breakfast. There is a strong correlation between eating breakfast and memory and cognitive functioning.

3. Have your child dress comfortably.

4. Be positive and communicate that this is your child’s chance to show what he/she knows. The most important thing you can do right before the test is to build confidence about doing his/her very best.

After the test:

1. Talk to your child about his/her feelings about the test.

2. Discuss what was easy and what was hard; discuss what your child learned from the test.

3. Explain that performance on a test does not define him or her as a person. It is just one opportunity to demonstrate learning.

Thank you for your continued support and involvement in your child’s education. Together we can make a difference!
