Good Evening 2019-20 Viking Families-

Earlier today I spoke to all current 6th and 7th grade students during their PE class about the changes in our school design we will be experimenting with during the 2019-20 school year. I stayed to answer student questions afterwards and am happy to report that the majority of students indicated their tentative approval (thumbs up!) to try out something different. Therefore, I am excited to officially open the window for students to submit their online electives course requests for the 2019-20 school year. All course descriptions are available in the form. The window to access this form will close on Tuesday, May 28th @ Noon.

Please click on the following link to access the ISMS Electives Course Request for the 2019-20 school year: You can also copy and paste the website.

You are also invited to attend any of the following school community events to hear about the Sowers 2019-20 school year first hand:

  • **Returning Families 2019-20 Information Night**: Wednesday, June 5th @ 6pm in the Mall
(recently added due to community feedback!!)
  • Coffee with the Principal: Thursday, June 6th @ 10am in the Library

Hello Viking Students, Families, and Staff!

Starting this week and continuing until the end of May students will be taking standardized tests from the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress portal. Students will be tested as follows:

8th grade:

California Science Test                                   4/23/2019-4/26/2019

English Language Arts/

Literacy and Mathematics Test                         5/8/2019-5/17/2019

7th grade:

English Language Arts/

Literacy and Mathematics Test                         4/29/2019-5/7/2019

6th grade:

English Language Arts/

Literacy and Mathematics Test                          5/8/2019-5/17/2019

You play an important part in helping students give their best performance on this important test. As you know, we have been busy preparing and reinforcing the skills necessary for students to demonstrate their learning. Even though this assessment is a snapshot—one single perspective – it is important that our students have every advantage to do their very best. We don’t want to cause test anxiety, rather we want our students to be as prepared as possible. There are many ways in which you can help your child put his/her best foot forward.

The following guidelines can help set our students up for success:

The night before the test:

1. Make sure your child goes to bed on time so he or she is well-rested.

2. Keep your routine as normal as possible. Upsetting natural routines may make children feel insecure.

3. Be positive and confident in the fact that you know your child will do his/her best.

4. Plan ahead to avoid conflicts on the morning of the test.

The morning of the test:

1. Get up a few minutes early to avoid rushing and make sure your child arrives at school on time.

2. Have your child eat a nutritious breakfast. There is a strong correlation between eating breakfast and memory and cognitive functioning.

3. Have your child dress comfortably.

4. Be positive and communicate that this is your child’s chance to show what he/she knows. The most important thing you can do right before the test is to build confidence about doing his/her very best.

After the test:

1. Talk to your child about his/her feelings about the test.

2. Discuss what was easy and what was hard; discuss what your child learned from the test.

3. Explain that performance on a test does not define him or her as a person. It is just one opportunity to demonstrate learning.

Thank you for your continued support and involvement in your child’s education. Together we can make a difference!

Good Morning Viking Families-
I would like to cordially invite all Sowers families to attend our annual springtime Open House next Thursday, February 21st. The evening officially starts at 6pm as we welcome all families into your student’s classrooms to see some great student work, our learning spaces, and to interact briefly with our staff. The classrooms walkthroughs will follow a relaxed format from 6:00 - 7:00pm, so feel free to move through your child’s class schedule or visit other classrooms as you’d like. As a parent, I can definitely appreciate the face time opportunity with teachers, but please be mindful that individual conferences regarding your student(s) are available at other times in order to ensure privacy/confidentiality.

I am excited to announce this year there will be two pre-Open House events at Sowers. The first is a parent preview night of an assembly that Phoenix House, one of our counseling groups at Sowers, will deliver to all students on Friday, February 22nd. The preview will take place in the Library Commons from 5:00 - 5:30pm. There is limited seating available, so this would be on a first come, first serve basis.

The second event is an opportunity to hear some of our amazing vocal music students during a short performance in the Mall from 5:30 - 5:55pm. At the conclusion of this performance there will be an announcement letting all families know that classrooms are open. Please do not head over to classrooms prior to this announcement as teachers will be preparing for the evening.

I look forward to seeing you next Thursday, February 21st from 6-7pm for classroom walkthroughs and possibly at one of the pre-Open House events.

Enjoy the long weekend and… Go Vikings!

This is Part 2 of 4 emails in our HBC October Dyslexia Awareness Campaign.  This week we are covering effective approaches to teaching students with dyslexia.

Attached are the California Dyslexia Guidelines for Effective Approaches to Supporting Students with Dyslexia.  While there is no single program that is most effective for students with dyslexia, it is agreed that a structured literacy program best supports students.

Please contact the Special Education Department at 714-378-2046 if you have any questions about dyslexia or the attached information.

Good Morning Viking Families-

Next week we are excited to hold parent teacher conferences for our families. They will be held in 15 minute sessions on Tuesday afternoon (Oct. 23), all day Wednesday (Oct. 24), and Thursday afternoon (Oct. 25). These conferences allow families of students having difficulty in class (i.e. progress reports) create a learning partnership with our teachers. This partnership is an important early intervention that can have a positive impact on student growth when the school, the family, and the student develop a strong bond. Please keep in mind that these conferences are dissimilar to elementary school conferences where teachers have 30(ish) students in each class. Middle school teachers have, on average, 30+ students in each period. Therefore, it is not possible for all families to have a one on one meeting with each teacher during this short time frame. We do encourage healthy dialogue between the home and school and welcome families to reach out to teachers via School Loop if a face to face meeting is not initially needed.

We use an online parent scheduler to assist in scheduling these meetings. To make an appointment please follow these steps:

  1. Click here or visit:

  2. Click "GO"

  3. Enter the school password: sowers (all lowercase)

  4. Enter your student's ID number and birth date to make appointments.

Have a great rest of the week. Go Vikings!

Good Morning Viking Families-

Whenever a student is checked out/signed out at the front office, the parent/guardian doing the pick up is required to present a valid ID. Also, please be advised that if a person other than the parent/guardian is picking up a student that the parent/guardian must send an email to Attendance ( or a note with parent/guardian signature prior to the student being released. Thanks for your assistance with this updated procedure.

Have a great rest of the week!
Dr. Ashby

For the second year, the HBCSD Board Members passed a resolution to recognize Dyslexia Awareness Month in October.  HBCSD is continuing to raise awareness through sharing information on the website, Constant Contact notifications at the school site, professional development for staff, and the West Orange County Consortium for Special Education Community Advisory Committee.

The International Dyslexia Association (IDA) provides the following definition of dyslexia, which was adopted by the United States National Institutes of Child Health and Human Development:

Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that is neurobiological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities and the provision of effective classroom instruction. Secondary consequences may include problems in reading comprehension and reduced reading experience that can impede growth of vocabulary and background knowledge.

Below is a link to the new California Dyslexia Guidelines prepared by the California Department of Education in August 2017.  This is a rich source of information including describing dyslexia, assessment, and best practices to support students that are struggling with dyslexia.

If you would like further information about dyslexia, please contact the Special Education Department at 714-378-2046.

I would like to invite you to attend a parent preview night of our Teen Truth assembly that is taking place this Friday, September 14th for all students. The preview night will be held from 5:30-7pm in room 402 this Thursday, September 13th and will be hosted by friday’s presenter, Jared Scott, who will cover the topics that will be delivered to our students the next day. This is the second consecutive year that we are partnering with Teen Truth due to the success of the program last year.

This preview night is an opportunity for you to learn about topics that will be presented to students the following day in a morning assembly schedule. The topics include: bullying and school violence, self-esteem, and parent/family communication. This will serve as this year’s conversation opener within our school community as we continue to address the overarching goals of the school which are:  to have students treat others with kindness and respect, develop strong personal character where they value who they are as individuals, and strengthen the relationships between students, parents, and the school so that open conversations build healthy relationships.

As a father, I know that I want to be a friend to each of my wonderful daughters, but at the same time I know at times they may not be fond of me because I have to make tough parenting decisions that are in their best interest. So, once again, I encourage you to attend this Thursday to join me in the continual development of our school to promote responsible, respectful citizens.

I hope to see you in a few days. Go Vikings! SS
