National Junior Honor Society

Sowers Vikings Chapter of NJHS

More than just an honor roll, the National Junior Honor Society, NJHS, serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship. 

Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service.

NJHS LogoNJHS accepts Membership Request Forms each February from 7th and 8th-grade students only.

Membership in this chapter is an honor bestowed upon deserving students by the faculty and shall be based on the criteria of scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship.

Eligibility:

  • Candidates eligible for selection to this chapter must be in the second semester of seventh grade or in the eighth-grade class.
  • To be eligible for selection to membership in this chapter, the candidate must have been enrolled for a period equivalent to one semester.
  • Candidates eligible for election to the chapter shall have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.75 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Candidates must have no suspensions, U’s, N’s, etc. from any year at Sowers.
  • Upon meeting the grade level, enrollment, and GPA standards, candidates shall then be considered based on their service, leadership, character, and citizenship.

All NJHS members are expected to uphold these qualities:

Scholarship
NJHS students have and will maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.75 or higher.

Service

NJHS students voluntarily contribute to their school and community, done without compensation and with a positive, courteous, and enthusiastic spirit.

Leadership 

NJHS students are leaders who are resourceful, good problem solvers, promoters of school activities, idea-contributors, dependable, and persons who exemplify positive attitudes about life.

Character

NJHS students uphold principles of morality and ethics, are cooperative, demonstrate high standards of honesty and reliability, and show courtesy, concern, and respect for others.

Citizenship
NJHS students who demonstrate citizenship understand the importance of civic engagement; have high regard for freedom and justice; respect the U.S form of government; respect the law for all citizens at the local, state, and federal levels; and demonstrate mature participation and responsibility in activities such as scouting, community organizations, or school clubs.
