    Tdap Requirements

    Dear Parent/Guardian,

     

    Whooping cough, also known as pertussis, continues to threaten students in California. To help stop its spread, all incoming 7th graders are required by law to have proof of a whooping cough booster (‘Tdap’) shot, or file an exemption, in order to attend classes this year. Students will not be allowed to attend classes without a shot record.  

     

    Please schedule an appointment immediately with your doctor, or visit this website for information regarding local clinics/facilities in our area that provide the Tdap booster.

    It's summer in Viking Country!!

     

    We hope that all Viking Families have an enjoyable summer vacation spent with family and friends. We look forward to a great 2018-19 school year packed with engaging student learning experiences designed to facilitate academic and socio-emotional growth in each student. 

     

    While we are out of the office, here is useful information as we all head towards the first day of school on Thursday, September 6th.

     

    • Where Everybody Belongs Day (Tuesday, August 28th): All incoming 6th grade students are invited to come to campus from 8-11am to have fun and learn more about Sowers and what to expect from our great student leaders. This is a student only event. 
    • Registration Packet Pick-Up (Thursday, August 23rd; 8am - 2pm): While the majority of registration information will be completed online, we encourage families to come pick up their registration packet in the front parking lot. 
    • Registration Day (Wednesday, August 29th): 6th Grade Students, 8-10am; 7th Grade Students, 11am-1pm; 8th Grade Students, 2-4pm. If your student(s) will be in 7th grade ensure to have your TDAP documentation on file with the school clerk. 
    • Placement Information: If you have questions regarding your student's placement into CORE or Math for the upcoming 18-19 school year, please visit HBCSD's Placement Criteria (https://goo.gl/zoGiYx) and FAQs (https://goo.gl/CbJx45). No preliminary placement letters will be sent out to families this summer as we are not able to predict when scores are received from the state.
    • First Day of School (Thursday, September 6th): Welcome back Vikings!!! This is a planning day schedule day, with classes starting at 8:35am and ending at 1:20pm.

    Start of School 2018-19 (Important Dates) Posted 6/18/18

    The following are some key dates to keep in mind within the first few weeks of the 2018-19 school year...

    • Wednesday, August 29th: Registration Day 
      • 6th Grade: 8-10am; 7th Grade: 11am - 1pm; 8th Grade: 2-4pm
      • Students will take their school picture, receive their ID card, pick up their tentative schedule, be issued lockers and textbooks, and have the option to purchase PE clothes. 
      • Please note that all incoming 7th graders must have a TDAP on file with our health aide in order to get in line for registration. Please contact Kaleen Rephser (krepsher@hbcsd.us) for TDAP information. 
      • Access to the online portal for Data Confirmation will be made available during the summer. Please be sure and bring your signed "Data Confirmation Sheet" and "Student release in case of a disaster" to registration day.
         
    • Thursday, September 6th: 1st Day of School (Planning Day Schedule: 1:17pm Release)
    • Monday, September 10th: Make Up Picture Day 
    • Thursday, September 27th: Back to School Night (6:30-7:30pm)
    • Tuesday, October 9th: Coffee with the Principal (9am)

    !!8th Grade: End of Year Activities!!

    This is an exciting time as your son or daughter is ready to make the leap to high school. I am excited to share out the following information to help with your planning as we head into the final stretch. 

     

    Gown Distribution (6/14): All eligible 8th grade students will be able to pick up their gown for the promotion ceremony in the park starting at 1:20pm in the park. 

     

    FREE Promotion Dance (6/15, 6-8pm): All eligible 8th grade students are welcome to attend the inaugural Promotion Dance that is only for our promoting 8th grade students! Music, food, and fun... for FREE!! A big thank you goes out to the PTSA for their generous support of this event. All students will need to bring a signed permission slip to the ASB tables set up during lunch Monday-Friday (6/11 - 6/15) next week. We hope to see you all at the dance!

     

    Disneyland Trip (6/20): All students who have already purchased their tickets will take the bus to Disneyland. the buses will leave Sowers at 9am and return from Disneyland at 9pm. All students must ride the bus to and from Disneyland.

     

    Promotion Practice (6/22): All students are required to attend the Promotion practice on Friday, June 22nd during period 1-3. At the start of Period 4 (11:16pm) all 8th grade students will head over to the park where we will have a check out station for parents to pick up their students. 

     

    Promotion (6/22, 2:30pm @ Edison HS): The Promotion ceremony will be held at "The Bowl" at Edison HS and will start promptly at 2:30pm.
