Good Afternoon Viking Students and Families!

I hope that you all had a great week off and are well rested and ready for a great last few months of the school year. I'm sending this out tonight to bring clarity to some important upcoming events towards the end of the 2017-18 school year: Distinguished Honor Roll recognition and 8th Grade Promotion.

I made the decision to change the manner in which students who earn the Distinguished Honor Roll are recognized at the beginning of the year for a few reasons: I had numerous conversations with students with great grades (3.6+) that were told they weren’t “good enough” to attend the trip; the trip to Knott’s was during the instructional school day but did not provide any education value for students; while some students were legitimately sick, we received myriad parent phone calls for students that happened to be “sick” on the day of the event (in fact more than 10% of our population was out that day. I have worked alongside our student leaders in ASB to gather feedback from all students about what they wanted to celebrate their accomplishments within the parameters of honoring the school’s instructional minutes while also keeping the celebration on campus. Their collaborative, and creative, solution recognizes the academic achievement of our Distinguished Honor Roll recipient for their efforts in the classroom during the 2017-18 school year. Please click the following link for a great video that was produced, directed, and edited by our ASB student leaders (https://youtu.be/ELWSCkJN-sY). The Distinguished Honor Roll event will be held on May 31st from 1:30-3:00pm on the Sowers MS campus. We hope it’s lots of fun for all those in attendance!

Also, I firmly believe that the transitions our students make from 5th - 6th grade and 8th - 9th grade are very important milestones for students that must be supported and celebrated. However, the culminating K-12 academic celebration for our students will not occur until they graduate from high school in a few years. That being said, I have come to appreciate the desire of families to be able to attend end of year celebrations/traditions at both elementary and middle school. As such, this year Sowers will be piloting a later start date by 30 minutes to allow families to take part in these events. Start time for promotion on June 22nd will be 2:30pm.

That's all for now. Have a great rest of the week and… Go Vikings!

Show Choir auditions are on May 8 & 9 in room 208! You only have to audition on one of the days and you get to choose which day you want to come audition. We offer two show choir classes for 7th & 8th graders: Girls Show Choir and Mixed Show Choir. We also offer Viking Concert Choir but you do not need to audition for that class. The auditions are for the Show Choirs only. Your elective card has the description for these classes.

Even if you are not currently in choir, I would still love to see you at auditions. Attached is a form with instructions and tips on how the audition works. Please fill out the 2nd page and return that to me or the front office by April 30th. If you have any additional questions, please do not hesitate to contact me (rtan@hbcsd.us). I look forward to seeing you all there!

Good Morning Sowers Families-
I implore you to take 10-15 minutes to give us feedback on how we are doing here at Sowers on a variety of topics. A hard copy survey was sent home with all students last Friday. There is also an option to complete the survey online at the following link:

https://surveys.panoramaed.com/huntington/5125981289/surveys

I'd like to extend a big thank you to the families that have completed the survey either online or turned in the hard copy to the office! Here are our current numbers on both methods...

  • 75 online surveys completed
  • 22 hard copy surveys received

Unfortunately, these totals represent approximately 8% of our total population at Sowers. In order for the school to truly serve the community it is important that feedback is received before March 30th when the survey window closes. So if you haven't had the chance to take it, please do so as soon as possible.

Thanks so much for your feedback, participation, and continued support. Go Vikings!

On the 4th anniversary of the #HourOfCode, we’re celebrating record momentum for computer science. We have big announcements to share and a new video to inspire students!

The big event

Monday, the top women in tech – Melinda Gates, Peggy Johnson, Sheryl Sandberg, and Susan Wojcicki – joined Code.org president Alice Steinglass and CSTA lead Deborah Seehorn to kick off CS Education Week.

Almost 200 governments, school districts, and nonprofits pledge to expand CS for millions of students, globally
Alabama, Arkansas, California, Florida, Hawaii, Indiana, Montana, and Pennsylvania, all announced plans to expand CS in schools, joined by 76 U.S. school districts and 80 nonprofits. Internationally, 20 nonprofits and entire countries pledged to expand CS programs for 20,000 teachers and over 2 million students. Read (and share) the news here.

"Anything worth doing doesn't come easy."
Watch basketball champ Stephen Curry try the Hour of Code!

Check it out on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube

He’s joining Stacy Hinojosa (StacyPlays), Sheryl Sandberg, Russell Wilson, Susan Wojcicki, and myself to inspire kids. When you do your Hour of Code, post your creation to get a personal video chat with one of us!

Make a simple app in one hour
Check out Code.org’s new App Lab activity.

AppLab, our coding tool for middle and high school, is now open for anyone to build JavaScript apps. If you’re ready to go beyond block-based coding, the new Hour of Code tutorial helps you design a “choose your adventure” app in JavaScript or blocks. Making your own web app has never been easier.

10 million girls have accounts on Code.org!
This milestone is personal for me. If only 1% of the girls actively learning on Code.org continued past high school, they’d outnumber the gender gap in university CS!

I’m immensely proud of all the students – boys and girls – who have shown that anybody can learn. We can’t wait to see what you create.

What matters most comes after the Hour of Code
From Afghanistan to Zimbabwe, every country is participating in the Hour of Code, and together we’ll pass 500 million “hours served” to celebrate the 4th anniversary of this incredible campaign.

But one hour is only the beginning. Go beyond an Hour of Code and pledge to bring computer science to your school

The global movement continues to accelerate, thanks to you and your support for our shared vision that every student in every school deserves the opportunity to learn computer science.

I’m forever humbled and grateful for your support.

Founder, Code.org

Good Afternoon Viking Families-
This is John Ashby, your principal. I’d like to briefly share out some upcoming events we have planned for the month of December at Sowers.

First off though, I’d like to congratulate our amazing music students (and teachers) for some great performances during 1st and 2nd period this morning. If you have gotten your tickets for next week’s Celebration of the Season concert you are in for a real treat.

Next Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday (12/6-9) the library will become our home base for coding as Sowers participates in the worldwide Hour of Code event. Each elective class will come to the library for one class period so that all Vikings are able to participate in the event. Students will be introduced to computer science in activities designed to demystify “code”, to show that anybody can learn basic coding, and to broaden the participation in the field of computer science at Sowers. We are joining over 200,000 educators worldwide in this grassroots campaign that runs concurrently with Computer Science Education Week. Please note that the library will also be open to students during 4th and 5th period lunch on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday for students to get some extra coding in if they’d like. Go to www.hourofcode.com for more information.

Another opportunity later this month that is coming up is an assembly called Teen Truth which will be held on Wednesday, December 20th to address putting an end to bullying and address relevant social emotional issues and the impact of social media on self-esteem. We invite parents to attend a parent preview of the assembly the night before on Tuesday, December 19th from 5:30-7pm. Go to www.teentruth.net for more information about the assembly.

Finally, I’d like to invite you to join me next week for Coffee with the Principal on Tuesday, December 5 at 9am in the library. Feel free to bring your favorite mug and a question or two you’d like to have answered.

I hope you had an enjoyable break and I look forward to three more great weeks of school here at Sowers before Winter Break. Thanks for your time and Go Vikings!

It's that time of year to spread some cheer to those that are less fortunate than us.

"The County of Orange Operation Santa Claus program provides gifts and toys to children who are abandoned, neglected, and/or abused and are placed in foster care in Orange County. In addition, Operation Santa Claus provides holiday gifts to children of disadvantaged families who are receiving services from the County of Orange(Orange County Social Services Agency)."

Please stop by the office anytime during December to pick up an Angel Tag and donate a new and unwrapped gift (no used items please) December 18th - 20th.  Gifts can be brought in to your first period teachers . The first period class who donates the most gifts will get a donut party!

Feel free to check out the link attached for more information.

Attention all Vikings!

Our very own National Junior Honor Society has begun their fall project. This season you can make an impact by helping us rise against hunger. We have the goal of collecting $3,750 to donate over 10,152 meals. We will be packaging the meals on December 7th.  The donations are tax deductible and effect those who truly need a good meal. Those affected by Hurricane Harvey, Hurricane Maria, and Hurricane Irma victims can all benefit from your support. If every student donates $5 to this cause, we can easily reach our goal. So join the fight against hunger to help families in need. Thank you.

Google Single Sign-On for myHRW:

To ease the process of logging into the Language Arts curriculum, we are transitioning to a Google Single Sign-On (SSO) system. This transition will allow students and teachers to log onto myHRW without needing to select our district and schools from the drop-down menus.

When logging into the curriculum from any device on campus, students will click the Holt McDougal Online icon on the student portal page. If they already logged into Google, then they will automatically be taken to their account. If they are not logged into Google, they’ll be taken to a standard Google login prompt where they can login with their username and password.

Our Single Sign-On link for myHRW is: https://myhrw.com/sp/access?sp+hrm&connection=hbcsd-us Please update your saved bookmarks with the updated link. If you have any questions please contact Pree Bhattacharya at the District Office at 714-378-2034.

From the HBCSD GATE Office:

HBCSD provides a special program fro students who are intellectually gifted. Children in grades 1-2 who perform extremely well on the district-administered Otis-Lennon School Ability Test (OLSAT) and other standardized measurements may qualify for identification as Gifted and Talented (GATE). If you think your child may qualify for identification and yo uwould like to have him or her assessed, a GATE Assessment consent form may be submitted on the Huntington Beach City School District website at: www.hbcsd.us from October 23 - December 13, 2017, by clicking Parents, Parent Portal, GATE Assessment Consent Form, or by contacting Debbie Bartlett in the GATE office at (714) 964-8888 ext. 2036 during these dates.

The last day to submit Consent forms is Wednesday, December 13, 2017.

Please note that district policy limits the number of times a student may be assessed to a maximum of two times between first and seventh grade. Due to the limited opportunities to test for the GATE program, you may wish to discuss with your child's teacher if this would be an appropriate time to have your child assessed.

Testing will take place from January 10 through February 7, 2018. Children who qualify for placement in the program will be placed in the fall of the 2018-19 school year.

Good Afternoon Viking Families-

The HBCSD Board adopted a resolution to recognize October as Dyslexia Awareness Month.  The California Department of Education published the California Dyslexia Guidelines to assist educators with identifying and supporting students with dyslexia.

Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that is neurobiological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities and the provision of effective classroom instruction. Secondary consequences may include problems in reading comprehension and reduced reading experience that can impede growth of vocabulary and background knowledge. (IDA 2002)

If you have concerns for your child, please contact the school so that we can assist you with your concerns.

Good Morning Viking Families -

The following information has been provided by HBCSD regarding attendance....

The school year has begun and we are off to a great start.  I want to welcome you as our partner in your child’s education.  We value, appreciate, and seek out your involvement and collaboration for the success of your child.  We are asking all parents to help us ensure the regular, on-time attendance of their children at school.  We monitor attendance closely because research has shown that regular attendance is vital for the success of children in school. California law states that absences are excused only if the child is ill or there is an excuse which meets the requirements of Education Code Section 48205. Even excused absences that cause your child to miss significant amounts of school can cause your child to fall behind in class. We will begin mailing out letters for students with 3 or more unexcused absences and 5 or more excused absences to inform you of our concern.  Should absences continue, you will continued to be notified by mail, and will be required to meet to discuss attendance issues and offer solutions to assist you and your child in coming to school regularly.  If these efforts fail to bring a solution, you and your child may be referred to the School Attendance Review Board (SARB).  We look forward to our partnership for the success of your child.

Have a great week Vikings!
